Set The Table

How to Create a Tablescape
By Brittney Crawford

Step 1: Find Your Inspiration

You can scroll through Pinterest and Instagram for hours on end to help you find inspiration and a theme for your next gathering but sometimes you can be inspired be what’s in front of you. It can be the season, a holiday, a special occasion or even an event.

Step 2: Gather What You Need

Just like preparing a recipe, you’ll want to make sure you have all your ingredients. It’s best to plan your tablescape with knowing what you need, what you already have on hand and what you may need to purchase. Here’s some ideas of items you may want to incorporate: • Basics: Dishes, Glasses, Napkins, Silverware, Runner/Tablecloth or Placemats • Décor: Candleholders and Candles, Serveware and Greenery Remember you may already have the majority of these items around your house. However, if you do need to make a purchase, check out the Dining & Entertaining section at your local Navy Exchange or online at myNavyExchange.com!

Step 3: Start With a Clean Slate

Make sure you clear the space of everything so you can clearly see the space which will help you visualize how you want to set up your tablescape.

Step 4: Add the Base

Whether you chose a tablecloth, runner or place mats you’ll want to place those down first. Tip: Always check if your tablecloth, runner (or even napkins) need to be ironed.

Step 5: Create Your Centerpiece

The centerpiece is the focal point of your table and it’s where you’ll want to show off your creativity. Keep in mind that when you’re putting together your centerpiece you’ll want to make sure it adds texture, color and contrast to complement the theme of your tablescape.Tip: While you’ll want to vary the height of different décor pieces for visual interest make sure you don’t unintentionally create a barrier to conversation.

Step 6: Add Your Place Settings

Once you’ve created your centerpiece add in your place settings around the table: dishes, silverware, glasses, napkins, napkin rings. Creating a beautiful tablescape will give you confidence in your ability as the “host(ess) with the mostest” and is a fun creative outlet. Enjoy designing!
