Disability Plans

This benefit is available only to regular full-time associates. NEXCOM has two Disability Insurance Plans to help replace lost income when you are not able to work because of a disabling illness or injury.

This benefit is provided at no cost to regular full-time associates upon completion of one year of regular service. STD benefits start two months after you become disabled or once you have used up sick leave, whichever happens later. STD benefit payments are 60% of your basic monthly earnings and are paid for a maximum of 4 months, after exhaustion of your sick leave or a 2 month waiting period, whichever occurs later. To receive benefits, you must be unable to perform the duties of your occupation. STD benefits are integrated with your sick leave benefit. If you have 4 months or more sick leave in your account no separate STD benefits will be paid.

LTD pays benefits when your disability lasts longer than the period covered by STD. After 24 months of combined STD and LTD benefits, you must be unable to perform the duties of any occupation you are qualified for through training, education or experience, in order to continue receiving benefits. Benefit payments are 60% of your basic monthly earnings and begin after the exhaustion of sick leave of a six month waiting period, whichever occurs later. Benefits are paid until the earlier of your recovery, age 65 if disabled prior to age 62. If you become disabled after age 62, benefits are paid for a reduced period of time. Benefits are reduced by any Social Security benefits and NEXCOM Retirement Plan benefits you may be receiving.

Regular full-time Associates may enroll in the LTD Plan for guaranteed coverage within 31 days of hire without providing evidence of good health. Associates who do not enroll at hire can enroll at the next open enrollment period for LTD, which occurs every two years. If you are enrolling during an open enrollment period, evidence of good health must be provided and coverage is subject to insurance company approval. The next biennial enrollment period will be November 2023.

You pay for LTD insurance according to your biweekly earnings. Effective January 1, 2025, the cost is $0.087 per $100 of biweekly earnings.
